Scientists believe life originated in water possibly in small pools with changing environmental conditions, like the hot springs of Puga Valley, Ladakh. These maintain temperatures near the boiling point even in cold climates, similar to early Earth about 3.5 billion years ago. The organisms living in these hot springs are mostly heat-loving bacteria called thermophiles, which are unicellular. Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, found that calcium carbonate deposits formed rapidly around these springs. These deposits may have; Protected early organic molecules from harmful radiation.

(i) Physical Change: A change in which no new substance is formed.

The immense variety of living organisms found on Earth – in different forms, sizes, and habitats – is called Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the occurrence of diverse or varied forms of living beings which differ from one another in external appearance, size, colour pattern, internal structure, nutrition, behaviour, habitat, etc.
Biodiversity is essential for life on the Earth. Every organism plays a role in keeping nature stable and functioning. Humans, too, depend on biodiversity for food, shelter, medicines and livelihoods. Organisms share certain similarities while also showing many differences. To study diversity systematically, scientists group and classify organisms based on their shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships. Currently there are 1.7-1.8 million organisms, all of which are different from one another. They range in size from microscopic bacteria, hardly a few micrometers in size, to blue whale (about 30 m in length) and Red wood Trees (Sequoia) of california (about 100m in height). Class 9 Science Exploration Chapter 13 Earth as a System: Energy, Matter and Life
Life and geological processes are powered by a constant flow of energy, primarily from the Sun, but also from the Earth ‘s hot interior and chemical reactions in rocks and water. The planet is presented as a complex “machine” where every part (the “spheres”,) depends on the others. Therefore Life on Earth is powered by a constant flow of energy and matter.
Instead of studying these separately, we now look them as one earth system made up of five interacting spheres.
. Geosphere: The solid rocks, soil, and landforms (including the Earth’s interior).
. Hydrosphere: All liquid water on Earth, such as oceans, rivers, and groundwater.
