Every person has ah idol in his or her life and that person influences our choices in life as well as inspires and shapes us into the person we dream of becoming.
Right from the word go, my mother has been my inspiration. A woman with immense wisdom she has made me what I am today. She is the linchpin of my success in life .She was a very hard-working person and one who valued education in one’s life.
Being a teacher by profession, she used to concentrate all her efforts in making her students score well. This also made me to follow her footsteps by working extremely hard in school. She always encouraged and advised me to work even harder, telling me that the sky was the limit.
My mother was a person with a lot of respect for both her elders and those younger to her. My entire life, I have seen the sagacity with which she settled domestic scores and reprimanded us when we erred. In both cases, consultations and dialogue were the key traits’ that guided her.
This has taught me the importance of tolerating other people’s injustices and seeking for consultations in times of difficulties. As a consequence, I have been able to live harmoniously with both friends and foes.
My moral decorum and uprightness is all a legacy from my mother. She always warned me against engaging in immoral activities. Being a humble and down-to-earth person, she ensured that I leant the need of swallowing one’s pride whenever success knocks at the door. She advised that forgetting the past success one must work even harder to succeed in the future.
I learnt the true meaning of the word Love from her. She taught me that it is a trait that cannot easily be self- cultivated in an individual. It can only be inborn in a person and the person would also shower it onto others in return. It is a trait that my mother had and she was generous in showering it, not only on her family, but also on people who came in contact with her.
Small gestures like understanding others’ prehlems, comforting those in pain, helping people in need without any expectations were representations of the love 7 within her. The love she showed sparked gave birth to a kindred one in me too and has enabled me to extend my love to all who associate with me in one way or another.

Mr. Das Gupta is a favourite of the whole locality. He is very helpful. He is ready to helpeverybody round the clock. He doesn’t mind even if one knocks at his door at midnight for any kind of help. He is a great favourite of the children. Every Saturday evening, he arranges a party for children in his lawn. His wife is equally helpful, loving and affectionate.
If we have any problem in our studies, she readily helps us. She prepares delicacies for us every now and then. Mr. Das Gupta’s sons are very friendly and helpful. They never boast of their classes. They are very good at games and sports. The elder son is the captain of our school cricket team. I feel that I am really very lucky to have such a nice family as my next door neighbour.

My favourite visitors.

My favourite visitors have just blown in- a couple of Firecrests, which are believed to be the smallest birds, have turned up in the flowering bushes that I look at through my office window. They can’t see me but I can see them.
There is definitely a male and he has the splendid orange bar on his head, centrally between yellow and black stripes. They give me great pleasure when they arrive in the depths of winter, especially like today when it has snowed and is very windy.
We have a growing list of recorded birds here. We see a great number of birds both resident and passing through. We usually see the Wheatear, the Tree Pipit and the Yellow Wagtail appearing for autumn, Guillemot and Razorbill in the winter and Firecrests and Redstarts in the spring. It won’t be too long before the Chiffchaff, the Short-Eared Owl, the Whitethroat and the Spotted Flycatcher arrive too. I love these unexpected visitors at my office window throughout the year.

Once in a small town lived a widow with a year old baby, named Golu. One day the widow had to go for work to the market so she left Golu playing in the park with her dog, Rufus. The lady instructed Rufus to take care of Golu till she returned. She knew Rufus loved Golu and was a well trained and disciplined dog. Golu was a very curious baby, and he loved to explore. The park was quite big and had a broken fence. Rufus sat down keeping one eye on Golu but soon he dozed off. When he got up with a start he saw that Golu had disappeared. Rufus ran around looking for Golu but he was lost.
Rufus was very worried, and did not know what to do. Then an idea struck him and he ran to the nearest police station and started barking loudly at the door. He had seen the police inspector at their house often and knew he was a good friend of the lady and would help. Soon the police inspector heard his barking and came out and recognised Rufus. The inspector could tell that Rufus was upset and wanted to tell him something. So he asked him what was wrong. Rufus ran a little signalling to the inspector to follow him. Rufus led the inspector back to the park and showed him where Golu had left his toys and had gone missing.
The inspector understood that Rufus was trying to tell him to find Golu.
The inspector and Rufus searched the park for Golu, but they couldn’t find him. The inspector was starting to get worried, but Rufus didn’t give up. He kept sniffing the ground and leading the inspector in different directions.
Finally, Rufus led the inspector to a pond. Golu was sitting on the edge of the pond, playing with a duck. The inspector was so relieved to find Golu safe and sound.
The police inspector picked up Golu and thanked Rufus for finding him. Rufus was so happy that he had helped to save Golu. Golu’s mother by that time had returned and the police inspector told her what had happened and how Rufus had found Golu. She was very grateful to the police inspector and Rufus for finding her son. She gave Rufus a big hug and promised to give him a big bone to chew.
Rufus was a hero. He had saved the day.

ii. You were one of the members of a team of relief volunteers during the rains that flooded
your city. Narrate your experience, the loss of lives and the damage to property. Mention the role you played in helping the victims.
Answer:
I was one of the members of a team of relief volunteers during the recent floods in our city. Our job was to pack the food and go to different centres and distribute the packets among the victims. I derived so much satisfaction out of the work. It was a harrowing experience, but it was also incredibly rewarding.
The floods came without warning. One day, the city was bustling with activity, and the next, it was underwater. The streets were turned into rivers, and homes and businesses were destroyed. People were stranded on rooftops, waiting to be rescued.
I arrived at the scene of the disaster with a team of other volunteers. We were all eager to help, but we were also overwhelmed by the scale of the damage. There was so much to do, and we didn’t know where to start.
We began by distributing food and water to the survivors. We also helped to clear debris and to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. We worked long hours, and we were exhausted, but we didn’t give up.
One day, we were called to rescue a family who was trapped on their roof. The father was injured, and the mother and children were terrified. We managed to reach the family and bring them to safety. The mother was so grateful, and she hugged us all.
That moment made all of our hard work worthwhile. It was a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
The floods were a devastating event, but they also brought out the best in people. I was so proud to be a part of the relief effort. I saw people from all walks of life come together to help their neighbours. It was a truly inspiring experience.

I strongly agree with the statement that people all over the world should speak one language. One of the main arguments in favour of having one language for everyone is that it would make communication much easier. If everyone spoke the same language, we would be able to communicate with each other without having to worry about language barriers. This would make it easier to travel, do business, and learn about other cultures.
Another argument in favour of having one language is that it would help to promote unity and understanding. If everyone spoke the same language, we would be able to understand each other better and would be more likely to see each other as equals. This could help to reduce conflict and promote peace.
A particularly convincing justification is that all humans regardless of nationality can communicate without language difficulties, which could be beneficial directly to the world’s economy. As a result, the world will witness a significant development in global economic. For instance, international goods trading or intercontinental tourism would be much easier if language barriers were eliminated.
Overall, there are both pros and cons to having one language for everyone. It is a complex issue with no easy answers.
In my opinion, I think that it would be beneficial if everyone spoke the same language. However, I also think that it is important to preserve cultural diversity. I think that the best solution would be for everyone to learn at least two languages: their native language and a common global language. This would allow us to communicate with each other easily, while also preserving our cultural heritage.

Our world is a magnificent mirror, which reflects it beauty in the form of its myriad diversity, cultures, traditions, religions, and the countless languages spoken. Nevertheless, it is indeed debatable to discuss whether there should be only one language spoken in the world. In my opinion, I disagree to the idea of having only one language spoken all around the world.
I believe, ‘langu’ge defines thinking’. It is more than just a medium of conversation. Having a variety of languages breeds a multitude of ways of thinking. As languages change, thinking and perspectives towards situations and challenges change. Finding solutions to problems will be easier and more likely.
Multilingualism not only helps personally, but also greatly benefits the world’s economy. If everyone spoke in one common global language, it is very much possible that competition for jobs would increase and perhaps, the extremely talented candidates might not be chosen In today’s rapidly developing gizmo world, apart from educational degrees and experience, knowing multiple languages plays a vital role in getting a job. In the long run, this would mean that, employment rates would increase and the world economy and living standards would increase as well.
However, there are also some arguments against having one language for everyone. One of the main arguments against it is that it would lead to the loss of cultural diversity. Languages are an important part of our cultures, and if everyone spoke the same language, we would lose a lot of our cultural heritage.
The main reasons for believing this are that language is one of the ways that people use to promote their special cultural and it contains cultural values of a nation which was accumulated and maintained throughout its evolution. Therefore, it would be extremely implausible if not only one but also many countries have to change their habits in using language Another argument against having one language is that it would be very difficult to achieve. There are thousands of languages spoken in the world, and it would be very difficult to get everyone to agree on one language to speak. It would also be very difficult to learn a new language, especially for older people.
We live in an increasingly globalized world where many cultural subtleties can slip through the cracks as we’re trying to understand past each other’s different dialects. Allowing oneself to be immersed in another language means opening the door to an entirely new culture and way of viewing the world.
Not only does a multi-linguistic world lead to regional unity, it also helps to keep sturdy the basic roots to the culture of each region. Having a mixture of languages makes prominent the individuality of different countries and cultures.

Every man in his life faces the ups and downs. Sorrows and pleasures are two parts of life. In fact, life is full of bad as well as good incidents.
Some of them are forgotten with the passage of time while others leave an everlasting impression on the mind. We do not forget them for the whole of our life. We enjoy the moments of pleasure while the moments of sorrow plunge us into despair. We cherish the moments of pleasure throughout our life.
Such a moment came to me last year when I learnt that I had stood first in the examination. It was really the happiest moment. It appeared that I have won the whole world. Though I had fared well in the examination, yet I was not hopeful of getting a first class. In fact, I was anxious for the result as some of the papers were not up to my expectation.
As it was to lay the foundation of my career, it all the more added to my tension. Hence the moment I learnt about the result, I was relieved of all my tension. I was satisfied that I could give a proper direction to my career as per my wishes. I first of all thanked God for His kindness. He had fulfilled my desires. I was pleased because all my friends had also ranked well. To celebrate our pleasure I, along with my other friends, chalked out a programme. We decided to go out for a picnic. We decided to go to a nearby lake resort.
Next day we started for the resort at 10 a.m. We reached there in two hours because there was heavy flow of traffic. The picnic spot was also crowded. As it was a sunny weekend of winter, there were lots of people who had occupied the place. We identified a place under a banyan tree. We laid our carpet there. We took out our snacks and other edibles which we had brought with us. First, we enjoyed alight refreshment.
We had also brought camera with us. We took snaps in different poses. We listened to music. We danced and played also. But meanwhile the moment of enjoyment was interrupted by the loud cries of the people. We rushed to the cries and were shocked to see that a small boy was drowning in the lake. He was crying for help.
One of my friends was an adept swimmer. He immediately jumped into the lake. After a great struggle, he dragged him out of the water. The boy was in a very critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital. With immediate care, his life could be saved. We postponed the whole programme midway and accompanied the sick boy. But we were pleased to see him regaining consciousness. The saving of one life was a source of tremendous pleasure.
Thus, it was a day of mixed pleasure but I feel it was also the happiest day as not only was I successful in doing well in exams but also saved a life which I feel gave all of us happiness. Not only a life was secured due to our timely help and assistance but it marked an important day in my career. The memory of this day is as fresh in my mind as if it happened today.

Drought, which results in the shortage of water, is mainly caused due to lack of rainfall. The situation is problematic and can prove to be fatal for those living in the drought-affected areas. It is particularly a curse for the farmers as it destroys their crops. Continuous droughtlike situation also leads to the soil becoming less fertile.
There are various factors that lead to drought:
Deforestation is said to be one of the main causes of shortage of rainfall that leads to drought. Adequate amount of trees and vegetation is required on land to limit evaporation of water, store enough water on land and attract rainfall. Deforestation and construction of concrete buildings in their place has caused a major misbalance in the environment. It lowers the capacity of the soil to hold water and increases evaporation. Both these are a cause of low rainfall.
Low surface water flow is another cause of drought. Rivers and lakes are the main sources of surface water in various regions around the world. In extreme summers or because of usage of surface water for various human activities, the water in these sources dries down leading to drought.
The negative impact of global warming on the environment is known to all. Among other issues, the emission of greenhouse gases that results in the rise in earth’s temperature has resulted in the rise in evaporation. High temperature is also a cause of wildfires that worsens the drought-condition.
Apart from these, excessive irrigation is also one of the causes of drought as it drains the surface water.
Though the causes of drought are largely known and are mostly the result of misuse of water resources and other non-environmental friendly human activities, nothing much is being done to curb this problem. It is time the governments of various countries should join hands to overcome this global issue.

Theodoric had been brought up by his mother, screening him from the hard realities of life. When she died she left Theodoric alone in a world that was as real as ever. He had been staying at a country vicarage, the inmates of which had been certainly not brutal. On a particular day he set out on a journey by train. The pony carriage that was to take him to the station had never been properly ordered; and when the moment for his departure drew near, the handy-man who should have helped him was nowhere to be found. In this emergency, Theodoric found himself obliged to collaborate with the vicar’s daughter in the task of harnessing the pony, which necessitated groping about in an ill-lighted stable which smelt of mice.
As the train glided out of the station, Theodoric’s clothes were giving out an odour 10 of mice. The only other occupant of the compartment, a lady of about the same age as himself, seemed inclined for slumber rather than scrutiny. The carriage was old fashioned and the seats were arranged in such a way that no further travelling companions were likely to intrude on Theodoric’s semi-privacy.
However, a warm creeping movement over his body betrayed the presence of a strayed mouse, that had evidently dashed into his clothes during the episode of the pony harnessing. Shakes and pinches failed to dislodge the intruder and the lawful occupant of the clothes lay back against the cushions and endeavoured rapidly to evolve some means for putting an end to the dual ownership. Nothing less than partial disrobing would ease him of his tormentor; and to undress in the presence of a lady made his ear-tips tingle in a blush of shame.
Theodoric was led into the most daring undertaking of his life and keeping an agonised watch on his slumbering fellow-traveller, he swiftly hung the railway-rug to the racks of the carriage, so that a curtain hung across the compartment. In the narrow dressing-room he freed himself from the intruder from his clothes. As the mouse gave a wild leap to the floor, the rug came down on the floor and the awakened sleeper opened her eyes. Theodoric pounced on the rug, and hauled it chin-high over his body as he collapsed into the further corner of the carriage.
The blood raced in the veins of his neck and forehead while he waited dumbly for words to come out of his mouth. The lady was contented herself with a silent stare at her muffled companion. How much had she seen, Theodoric wondered!
“I had one crawling creature inside my clothes just now,” said Theodoric. “It was a most awkward situation. I was getting rid of it that brought me to this embarrassment.” Then dashing madly towards a corner, he struggled frantically into his dishevelled clothes.
As he sank back in his seat clothed, the train slowed down to a final crawl, and the woman spoke:
“Would you be so kind,” she asked, “as to get me a porter to put me into a cab? It’s a shame to trouble you, but being blind makes one so helpless at a railway station.”

When one day Theodoric had to set out on a journey by train he found that the pony carriage had not been ordered properly and the handyman who was to help him was nowhere to be found. Theodoric solved these difficulties with the help of the vicar’s daughter but to harness the pony he had to find his way in an ill lit stable smelling of mice.
b. How can you say that the lady in the train was inclined to slumber?

There are a few clues in the text that suggest the lady in the train was inclined to slumber. First, the narrator describes her as being “of about the same age as himself.” This suggests that she is not a young woman, and therefore more likely to be tired and want to sleep.

The dual ownership referred to the presence of a mouse in the clothes worn by Theodoric. Now both of them were in the clothes. To rid himself of the mouse in his clothes Theodoric hung the railway rug to the racks of the carriage so that it formed a curtain across the compartment. He then proceeded to get the mouse out of his clothes in the makeshift dressing room.
d. How did Theodoric protect himself from the possible gaze of the lady?

Theodoric hung the railway- rug on the racks of the carriage to form a curtain across the compartment to protect himself from the possible gaze of the lady. While trying to rid himself of the mouse in his clothes Theodoric hid behind that he had hung on the racks of the carriage to form a curtain. But when the mouse leapt out of his clothes the rug fell and poor Theodoric had to pounce and haul it chin high to shield himself from the possible gaze of the lady.

Theodoric had felt embarrassed when the rug fell down and he was exposed $n$ an undressed state to the gaze of the lady. But it was funny when in the end the lady revealed that she was blind and Theodoric had himself told her about his state of undress.

Theodoric tried to get rid of the mouse in his clothes by shakes and pinches but to no avail. So he used a railway rug hung on the rack of the carriage as a curtain and disrobed to free himself from the mouse which then leapt out onto the floor.
