So he was looking for an opportunity to nab a small animal to satisfy his hunger.
It was then that lady luck shown on him and he saw a rabbit asleep under a big banyan tree. His hunger pangs were so loud that he was afraid it would wake up the rabbit and he would bound off. He quietly crept behind the slumbering rabbit and caught it.
Just as he was about to bite its throat, thus killing him, he saw two deer run past him. Against his better judgement his old hunting spirit got awakened and he got tempted with the idea of having more meat to eat and decided to hunt them too. He left the rabbit alone under the tree and told him in an authoritative growl not to go anywhere while he hunted the deer.
He ran after the deer leaving the rabbit alone. The rabbit sensed that this was his chance to escape the jaws of the lion, was quick to flee from there and save his life. He ran for his life as fast and as far he could go. The deer, who were swift and young, outran the old lion in a few minutes and the lion was left dejected, cursing his luck.
However, he consoled himself that he would eat the rabbit although it was not as fleshy as the deer. He went back towards the tree to eat the rabbit. When he reached the tree, he saw that the rabbit had disappeared and he was left hungry. He realised from his mistake that he had missed an opportunity by being greedy and not accepting the reality.

During the summer vacation you went to your grand-parents house situated along the railway line in a village. One night when you were sleeping on the terrace you heard a deafening crash. As you woke up you saw a horrifying train accident. Describe the scene of devastation, the help given by the villagers including you and your family and what did you learn from the experience.

Every year during my summer holidays I along with my family visit my grandparents house in a village near Patna. It so happens that their house is located on the outskirts of the village and quite close is a railway intersection which we as kids loved to watch from the terrace as we would try to guess the names of the trains and count the bogies.
This year too we all were spending our holidays there and at night I loved to sleep on the terrace under the myriad of stars in the summer sky. I was rudely woken from my sleep at around 2 a.m by the deafening sound of a screeching of brakes and them a loud crash. I jumped out of bed and ran to look at the railway lines from where the sound of the crash had come. I could now hear screams of pain and crying too.
Accidents are very common in railways. We regularly come across the news of railway accidents in the media. Often it is a derailment of a train, sometimes; it is head-on collision between two trains, etc. which frequently catch the headlines.
This seemed to me a head- on collision and as we later learned it was an accident between the Kalka Mail and Deluxe Express. It occurred during the early hours of the morning. There was a bang and then everything was lost.
It was a head-on collision. I saw that the train had begun to stagger with a deafening sound. There was hue and cry all around. People were shocked at the noise. By now most of the villagers had also heard the crash and we all rushed to the site to help as well as we could.
As it was early morning, most of the passengers had been in deep sleep. Those who were on the upper berths had fallen down and sustained serious injuries. The spot where the accident had taken place was a remotely backward area. There were no big hospitals or facilities of evacuation nearby. There were fields all around. Starting a rescue operation in such a place itself was a challenge. The villagers who were there in the field rushed to the help of the passengers.
The scene of accident presented a horrible sight. There were cries and noise. Some people were crying for help. Some were crying at the suffering and pain caused by the accident. The accident was so severe that the engine of the Kalka Mail, after ramming into the Deluxe Express engine, had forged deep into the compartments of the Kalka Mail.
The damage was greater to the Kalka Mail than the Deluxe Express. The driver of the Kalka Mail had died on the spot. Many people had died due to serious inquiries, while several passengers were still sandwiched in the windows of the train. Some passengers had lost their legs and arms while others were bleeding profusely.
The piercing cry of the kith and kin of the deceased was heart breakingi There was blood everywhere. The luggage lay broken and scattered. The belongings of the passengers were lying around the site of the accident.
The local villagers and members of the panchayat soon became active. Nearby hospitals and the district administration officers were contacted and soon medical aid was immediately rushed to the spot to help the injured and the trapped passengers.
There were ambulances and teams of doctors with all arrangement of first aid and emergency treatment. Those who had minor injuries were given first aid while the seriously injured were carried to the hospitals in ambulances. My family joined hands with the other to provide whatever aid we could give. Soon we helped our families to provide blankets, food and medicines to help the passengers of the ill-fated train.
The sight was heart rending as there were piles of dead bodies. Soon as the news spread, relatives and friends of the deceased started coming from far off places to identify the dead and claim the bodies. The whole area was crowded by the doctors, nurses, victims, social workers and villagers.
However, the administration did appreciable work. It efficiently handled the situation. The railways also did good work. Aid was swift and the administration announced ten lakhs to be given to the kith and kin of every deceased and one lakh to every injured.
In addition, it announced to offer government jobs to the immediate relatives of the dead. Even a special train was arranged for the stranded passengers. Many people were provided temporary shelter in the village school and we all ensured that they were made comfortable till they departed in the trains to their homes.

In most countries lack of awareness towards children with disabilities, is a hard reality. In some of the worst-case scenarios, they are abandoned or locked inside homes, without contact with the outside world. But luckily for Nirmala, she was born to parents who stood by her when at a viry young age she fell from the rooftop while playing and a a result lost the movement in her legs. Her parents spared no efforts or money to get her treated but unfortunately the damage could not be reversed.
Her parents encouraged Nirmala to live a normal life and told her that she must get proper education. They gave her confidence and said, “Do not lose heart. Remember that like other children you too must take hold of the opportunity to gain education. When we go to school, we have a future,” They got her enrolled in a good school and made her independent. They bought her a fully automatic wheel-chair and encouraged her to do most things herself and never consider that she was inferior to anyone.
Nirmala’s situation was further affected when her father and role model passed on before she turned four years old. However, the unfortunate incident didn’t deter her mother, Sunaina, from taking on additional responsibilities that came with raising her two daughters and a son. She also enrolled Nirmala in a mainstream school to enhance her personality and confidence in her abilities. Nevertheless, like many other children with disabilities, Nirmala’s journey was never a smooth one.
In our society discrimination, and lack of awareness towards children with disabilities, is a hard reality. In some of the worst-case scenarios, they are abandoned or locked inside homes, without contact with the outside world. Nirmala’s mother says, “I struggled to enrol her in a mainstream school.
Whenever I told the teachers about her disability, they would turn down the application. One Principal rejected her indicating that her presence in the school would affect other students”. But neither her mother nor Nirmala lost hope and persisted to fight the odds against them and her determination to excel proved many people wrong.
Nirmala excelled in the public examinations- scoring among the top students. Proud of her achievement, Nirmala feels her success does not belong to her alone. She admits that this 3 achievement wouldn’t have been possible without, the unwavering support and determination of her mother, who always believed in her potential.
She has proved that children with disabilities have unlimited potential when provided the support they deserve. When Nirmala was asked how she thinks about her condition today. She shared her life motto – “Right now, I just focus on what takes me forward. I used to fear people because I thought they would mock me. Now, I have accepted myself. My disability brings me treasures that would not have otherwise come”.
Her mother feels thatNirmala’s success goes beyond their individual achievement. “Nirmala’s success is also for other children not to lose heart. I hope her story can translate to more support and provide better learning environments for children and young people with disabilities,”

Over 3,000 mature trees have been strategically planted along key routes leading into Central Delhi. More than 100 fountains now grace the city, and an impressive seven lakh potted plants embellish the sidewalks along major routes connecting the New Delhi International Airport to Central and South Delhi.
As the city readies itself to host hundreds of G20 delegates for the upcoming leaders’ summit, the enthusiasm among residents is palpable. However, there is an ardent hope that these embellishments will not fade into oblivion or suffer neglect once the visitors depart.
The transformation also includes lighting and laser projections on some of Delhi’s iconic monuments. This has sparked outrage among culture enthusiasts and citizens.

As you are aware our states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been lashed by floods and landslides causing havoc and destruction of resources and taking heavy toll of human life.
Himachal Pradesh experienced 163 landslides and 72 flash floods. These extreme events caused significant damage to lives and property, especially in Mandi, Kullu, Manali, Shimla, and parts of Kangra.
The two hill states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have suffered a loss of Rs 12,000 crore. This includes:
- Rs 1.35 crore for human lives lost
- Rs 0.74 crore for the loss of cattle
- Rs 10.77 crore for loss and damage to house and property
- Rs 2,829 crores for the Public Works Department (PWD)
The Indian Meteorological Centre Shimla reported that June 2023 saw 21 \% excess rain. The state recorded 121.7 mm of rainfall against normal rainfall of 101.1 mm.
Landslides are a local soil threat in mountainous regions and on slopes. The regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in India have a long history of experiencing heavy rains, floods, and landslides. These natural phenomena are not new and have been occurring for centuries due to the region’s geographical features, topography, and climate patterns.

Bobby Gillian inherited a thousand dollars from his uncle, Old Gillian. The terms of the will stipulated that he had to render to the lawyers an account of the manner of expenditure of the one thousand dollars.
Gillian went to the club to see Old Bryson, and asked him for advice on how to spend the money. He told Bryson that several other people his uncle knew got far less – a seal ring and just ten dollars and these included Miriam Hayden, a young woman, who was the ward of his uncle.
After flippantly suggesting Gillian to spend the money on charitable endeavours, something he knew Gillian would never do, Bryson suggested that he should buy a diamond pendant for Lotta Lauriere, a singer Gillian was engaged to. Gillian liked this plan and rushed to the theatre to meet Latta.
He asked her what she would like that would be worth a thousand dollars. Lotta replĂed that she had seen a necklace costing more than two thousand dollars, and liked the look of it. Realising Lotta had too expensive tastes for him, Gillian left the theatre.
Outside the theatre, Gillian saw a blind man selling pencils. Gillian went to him and asked, “Would you mind telling me what you would do if you had a thousand dollars?” The blind man drew a small book from his coat pocket and held it out. Gillian opened it and saw that it showed a balance of 1,785 to the blind man’s credit. Gillian returned the book and then drove to the law offices of Tolman and Sharp.
“I beg your pardon,” said Gillian, cheerfully, “May I ask you a question? Was my cousin, Miss Hayden, left anything by my uncle’s will besides the ring and the 10 ?”
