The Magic Brush of Dreams Summary in English
Gopi, a young girl, is told to gather wild beans, rice, and mangoes, and bring something nice home, but she prefers sitting under a banyan tree, drawing pictures in the sand. The wind blows and sweeps her drawings away. A man sitting on a stone gives her a magic brush and whispers, “Hush! We mustn’t let the village know about this magic brush.” He tells her to use it only for the poor.

Gopi paints a bowl of khichdi with the brush and waits for it to dry before taking it to the villagers. Whatever Gopi paints with the magical brush turns into reality. Using it, she paints a muffler for a farmer, a plough for another man, a shawl for a grandmother, and a fan for a girl. She also paints a muffler for a farmer, a plough for another man, a shawl for a grandmother, and a fan for a girl. Word of her magic brush spreads, and soon the Zamindar, hears about it. He orders Gopi to paint a big castle for him, with treasures, jewels, and very rare, valuable items, but she refuses, saying she will only help the poor.
The Zamindar gets angry and locks Gopi in prison, demanding that she paint treasures for him. But instead of obeying, Gopi uses the magic brush to escape. While the Zamindar dreams of treasures that night, she paints a road, a horse, and a wide river that stops the Zamindar and his men from catching her, Gopi threatens that she will paint a beast to chase them away if they don’t stop. Scared of the magic, the Zamindar and his men run away. Gopi returns to her village, where she continues to use her magic brush to help those in need.
