A farmer lived in a small village and worked hard on his two fields. After some time, as his prosperity grew, he bought a third field. Next to this new field, was a well, which he bought from his neighbour to get water for his crops. However, the neighbour was dishonest and made a plan to trick him.
The next day, the farmer went to the well but his neighbour stopped him from taking water. The neighbour claimed he had sold only the well, not the water inside it. Confused and worried, the farmer went to the village chief and explained the issue.
The chief decided to hold a Panchayat meeting. On the chosen day, the Panchayat gathered under the banyan tree, and both the farmer and his neighbour were called. Many villagers were also present to know the judgment.
The farmer explained the issue to everyone present there. The village chief questioned the neighbour about why he was stopping the farmer from drawing water. The neighbour kept saying that he had only sold the well, not the water inside it. The Panchayat and villagers tried to convince him, but he refused to listen.
After hearing both sides, the Panchayat decided that the neighbour had only sold the well, not the water. They told the neighbour that if the water still belonged to him, he must remove it from the well or use it quickly. Otherwise, the water would belong to the farmer.
The farmer was relieved and happy with the decision. The neighbour realised cheating would not work, so he was fined and had to apologise. The villagers praised the Panchayat for their fair and wise judgment.
