A Tale of Valour: Major Somnath Sharma and the Battle of Badgam Summary in English
This chapter tells the inspiring story of Major Somnath Sharma, the first Indian soldier to receive the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military award for bravery.
Major Sharma was born in 1923 in Himachal Pradesh and came from a family with a strong military background. Even as a child, he was inspired by stories of courage and patriotism.
In August 1947, soon after India became independent, Pakistan launched “Operation Gulmarg” to illegally take over Kashmir, breaking an agreement with Maharaja Hari Singh. Their goal was to capture important places like the Srinagar airport.
To defend Kashmir, the Indian government sent its troops. Major Somnath Sharma, even with a plastered left hand, insisted on leading his D Company of the Kumaon Regiment to Srinagar, showing great commitment to his men and country.

On November 3, 1947, Major Sharma’s company was sent to patrol Badgam village, near the Srinagar airport. They were a small group of 90 soldiers, but they faced a much larger force of about 500 Pakistani invaders.
Knowing the importance of protecting the airport and Srinagar, Major Sharma bravely directed his men, even calling for air strikes and guiding the aircraft despite heavy enemy fire. His famous words, “I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to the last man and the last round,” showed his fierce determination when they were running low on ammunition and heavily outnumbered.

Major Somnath Sharma was tragically killed by a mortar shell while helping to load a machine gun. However, his incredible courage inspired his men to continue fighting for six more hours, delaying the enemy and allowing Indian reinforcements to arrive. This heroic resistance was crucial in saving Srinagar for India.
For his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and ultimate sacrifice at the young age of 24, Major Somnath Sharma was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. His legacy continues to inspire soldiers and citizens as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom.
