The Lagori Champions Summary
This chapter tells us about Lagori game. In this game there are two teams who play with each other. A field is marked with a boundary and seven flat stones are stacked one upon another in the centre of the field. One team member hits the stack of stones with a ball. If the stack of stones fall, the hitter along with their team members try to rebuild the stack.
Meanwhile, the members of opponent team try to collect the ball and strike the players of the first team who is trying to stack the ball. If the ball hits the player then they are out. But, if the first team rebuilds the stack of stones before getting out it wins. This is a very old game. In Rajasthan it is known as Satoliya and in English it is called Seven Stones.
Two teams are playing with each other. The first team is Sundarpur Tigers and its captain is Deepa. The second team is Green Warriors. All the team members gathered in the field. The referee blew the whistle and the game started. Deepa took the first shot, the ball hit the stack and the stones scattered. Sundarpur Tigers started building the stack again.
Ravi stacked two stones, Deepa added another stone. Nidhi placed the fourth and fifth stone, Ravi again came and stacked sixth stone and Prakash placed the seventh stone. While Sundarpur Tigers were trying to stack the stones, Green Warriors tried to hit the ball but Deepa and Ravi ducked the ball and were able to save themselves. Deepa’s team Sundarpur Tigers won the game. The villagers enjoyed the game. Besides other games we should also play our old traditional games.
Part 1
In the first part of the story, two cousins named Ravi and Prakash go to a children’s park on a sunny day. At the park, Ravi introduces Prakash to his friends – Guneet, Deepa, Nidhi and Imran. Guneet mentions that there is a Lagori match tomorrow. He suggests that Prakash should join their team because Prakash is a good runner. Prakash doesn’t know what Lagori is, so he asks his new friends to explain.
Nidhi tells him that Lagori is a game played with seven stones. Then Imran, who is a champion of the game, explains the rules. In Lagori, seven flat stones are stacked on top of each other. One team tries to knock down this stack with a ball. The other team tries to rebuild the stack while avoiding being hit by the ball.
Prakash recognises the game and says that in Rajasthan, they call it ‘Satoliya’. Guneet tells Prakash that their team is called the ‘Sundarpur Tigers’ and Deepa is their captain. Their opponent team for tomorrow’s match is the ‘Green Warriors’ from a nearby village.
Imran explains more rules of the game. Everyone gets ready for the match the next day.
Part II
The next day, all the children gather for the Lagori match. Deepa takes the first shot and successfully knocks down the stack of stones. Now the Sundarpur Tigers must rebuild the stack while the Green Warriors try to hit them with the ball. Ravi manages to stack two stones and dodges the ball. Deepa adds another stone while avoiding being hit.
Imran warns Deepa about an incoming ball and she dodges it just in time. Nidhi runs in and places the fourth and fifth stones before running away. Ravi, sweating with effort, puts the sixth stone in place.
Only one stone is left to complete the stack. The Green Warriors make one last attempt to hit Ravi with the ball. Before they can, Prakash rushes in and places the seventh stone on top. The referee blows the final whistle and the Sundarpur Tigers win the match!
After the game, players from both teams shake hands and congratulate each other for playing well. The villagers clap and cheer for both teams. The referee lifts the hands of both team captains and everyone celebrates with joy and laughter. Deepa says that playing Lagori was even more fun than playing video games.
