November 17, 2024
Dear Sushil
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It’s been a long time since we communicated.
I am writing to you to tell you how I celebrated Children’s Day at our school. As you know children’s day is celebrated in the memory of our first prime minister’s birthday Jawaharlal Nehru jii. He is known for the love he had towards small kids.
I had so much of fuh at school today. The best part was that there were no studies at school due to the celebrations of Children’s Day.. The morning assembly too was different. The speech on the significance of the Children’s Day was quite informative. Then the principal greeted and congratulated the children through the central communication system.
The program started off at morning sharp 9 am and it ended at 2 pm. Our Principal and Head mistress lit the lamp and then there was a classical dance preformed by the students from class six to twelve as a group. Our teachers performed many thought provoking skits, they sung for us and also danced and entertained all the students in the hall.
There was also prize distribution for the students who had excelled in academics and sports. Students were given snacks for refreshment in between the events. Our school’s head girl and head boy gave speech about the importance of children in our society Then at last there was a dance performance given by the students of class twelve and it was a breathtaking performance. It was 2 pm by then, we ended the program by singing the national anthem.
We then returned to our classes. We had decorated our class the previous day. Each class had its own party. The principal had allowed us to play music at a reasonably loud volume. Then we had a dance party inside the class. Finally, delicious eatables were served to the students from the school canteen. It was a perfect celebration of Children’s Day. Every student was made to feel special. With smiles on our faces, we thanked our teachers and the Principal. I hope you must have celebrated the day with zeal. Do write about your celebrations.
Yours sincerely,
Chetan

Write a composition (300 – 350 words) on any one of the following:
i. Write a story having the theme: ‘Small steps bring lasting change/
Answer:
In a charming village called Harmonyville, nestled among rolling hills and babbling brooks, resided a young girl named Maya. Despite the picturesque scenery, the village grappled with a persistent issue – scattered litter tarnishing its paths and fields. The villagers had grown accustomed to this unsightly mess, considering it too daunting to address.
Maya, however, viewed the situation from a different perspective. She firmly believed that small steps could yield lasting change. Motivated by this idea, she took matters into her own hands. Armed with a reusable bag and gloves, Maya embarked on a mission to clean a small section of the village each day. Her commitment did not go unnoticed.
Maya’s actions soon piqued the interest of the villagers. A few children joined her, and collectively, they formed the “Clean Village Club.” Daily, they diligently picked up litter, sorted recyclables, and encouraged others to follow suit. Maya’s small steps initiated a ripple effect.
As the Clean Village Club expanded, so did its impact. Villagers witnessed the positive transformation of their surroundings. The once-littered paths now gleamed invitingly, the air seemed fresher, and a sense of community pride swelled.
Maya’s initiative inspired a local artist, Mr. Monga, to craft beautiful sculptures from re-cycled materials. The village square transformed into an open-air gallery, showcasing the community’s dedication to sustainability. Small steps had undeniably brought about a lasting change in the village’s appearance and mindset.
News of Harmonyville’s transformation reached neighbouring villages. Intrigued by the . success story, they initiated their own clean-up endeavours. Maya’s small steps had sparked a regional movement, with villages uniting to make their surroundings cleaner and greener.
Harmonyville evolved into a shining example of how individual actions, irrespective of their size, could lead to significant and enduring change. The once-sceptical villagers now grasped the power of unity and the influence of collective small steps. Maya’s vision had materialized into reality, demonstrating that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, small steps could indeed create a ripple effect of positive change.

The usual smooth route of our school bus took an unexpected turn one afternoon when we found ourselves stuck in a traffic jam for a staggering two hours. The cause of this unusual delay was later identified as a major accident that had occurred ahead, leading to a complete standstill in traffic.
The difficulties we faced during this unexpected delay were quite significant. The confined space inside the bus became increasingly uncomfortable as time passed. Restlessness among the students grew, exacerbated by the lack of proper ventilation.

Select any one of the following:
i. You had been living in a small town for the past twelve years and have recently shifted to a big city with your family. Write a letter to your cousin who still lives in the small town, describing the difficulties you are facing with the fast-paced city life.
Answer:
XYZ Street
New Delhi
Dear Rahul,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It’s been a while since we last caught up, and a lot has changed since then. As you might have heard, my family and I have recently shifted to a big city after spending the past twelve years in our cozy little town.
The transition has been both exciting and challenging. Living in a small town for so long created a comfort zone that we took for granted. The fast-paced city life has thrown us into a whirlwind of new experiences, and I thought I’d share some of the difficulties we’ve encountered.
Firstly, the sheer scale of the city is overwhelming. The crowded streets, towering buildings, and constant hustle and bustle are a stark contrast to the calm and familiar surroundings of our small town. Navigating through the maze of unfamiliar roads and the relentless traffic has been quite a challenge.
The cost of living is another aspect that has taken some getting used to. Everything, from groceries to transportation, seems to come with a higher price tag. It’s been a learning curve for us to budget and manage our expenses effectively.
One of the most significant adjustments has been the lack of close-knit community vibes. In our small town, everyone knew each other, and there was a sense of warmth and familiarity. Here, in the city, people are always on the move, and building connections requires more effort.
Despite these challenges, we are trying our best to adapt and find the silver lining in this new chapter of our lives. I’m curious to know how things are back in our old town. Please share the latest happenings, and I hope we can plan a visit soon.
Take care, and looking forward to hearing from you.
Warm regards,
Karan

Question 4.
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Two men were sitting immediately in front of me in the train. I was consequently able to hear all that they were saying. They were evidently strangers who had dropped into a conversation. They both had the air of men who considered themselves profoundly interesting as minds. It was plain that each laboured under the impression that he was a ripe thinker. One had just been reading a book which lay in his lap.
“I have been reading some very interesting statistics,” he was saying to the other thinker. “Ah, statistics” said the other; “wonderful things, sir, statistics; very fond of them myself.” “I find, for instance,” the first man went on, “that a drop of water is filled with little…with little…I forget just what you call them-little-er-things, every cubic inch containing-er- containing-let me see…”
“Say a million,” said the other thinker, encouragingly.
“Yes, a million, or possibly a billion-but at any rate, ever so many of them.”
“Is it possible?” said the other. “But really, you know there are wonderful things in the world. Now, coal- take coal…”
“Very, good,” said his friend, “let us take coal,” settling back in his seat with the air of an intellect about to feed itself.
“Do you know that every ton of coal burnt in an engine will drag a train of cars as 20 long as…I forget the exact length, but say a train of cars of such and such a length, and weighing, say so much-from-from-hum! for the moment the exact distance escapes me-drag it from…” “From here to the moon,” suggested the other.
“Ah, very likely; yes, from here to the moon. Wonderful, isn’t it?”
“But the most stupendous calculation of all, Sir, is in regard to the distance from the earth to the sun. Positively, Sir, a cannon-ball-er-fired at the sun…”
“Fired at the sun,” nodded the other, approvingly, as if he had often seen it done.
“And travelling at the rate of…of…”
“Of three cents a mile,” hinted the listener.
“No, no, you misunderstand me, – but travelling at a fearful rate, simply fearful, Sir, would take a hundred million-no, a hundred billion – in short would take a scandalously long time in getting there
At this point I could stand no more. I interrupted – “Provided it were fired from Philadelphia,” I said, and passed into the dining car.
