The Case of the Fifth Word Summary in English
Encyclopedia is a very intelligent boy from Idaville, USA. His real name is Leroy, but except his parents and teacher, everyone calls him “Encyclopedia” because he knows many facts and remembers everything he reads. His father, Chief Brown, is the police chief. When he can’t solve a case, he talks about it at dinner, and Encyclopedia solves it before the meal ends. His father keeps this secret because no one would believe an eighth grader is the best detective.

One Tuesday night, Chief Brown said Tim Nolan died yesterday. Nolan and Daniel Davenport were suspected of robbing a jewellery store five years ago but were never proven guilty. They met in prison and became friends. Nolan later opened a palm-tree nursery, and Davenport stayed with him before the robbery. A clerk thought she saw Nolan during the robbery but was not sure and refused to testify. The stolen jewellery was never found, and Davenport disappeared after the crime. The police searched Nolan’s house but found nothing. Nolan had a weak heart and died after a stroke. Before dying, he left a will giving everything to Davenport. Chief Brown believes Nolan hid the stolen jewellery until it was safe to take it out.
Mrs. Brown asked what was unusual about the note on the will. Chief Brown showed her a paper with Davenport’s name, address, and four strange words: “Nom Utes Sweden Hurts.” She gave the note to Leroy for help. After thinking, Leroy asked about a young fir tree in Nolan’s nursery. He said the words were linked to the tree. Chief Brown and Mrs. Brown tried to understand, but the mystery was not solved yet. Chief Brown then asked Encyclopedia if he could solve the mystery.

Mrs. Brown explained the words but couldn’t solve the code. Encyclopedia said Nolan likely changed where the jewellery was hidden before dying. Chief Brown planned to find Davenport using the address. Mrs. Brown asked Leroy about the four strange words. He explained they were a code using days of the week with letters from “day” removed: “Nom” for Monday, “Utes” Tuesday, “Sweden” Wednesday, and “Hurts” Thursday. The missing fifth word, “Fir” for Friday, pointed to a young fir tree. The jewellery was found hidden in a big jug of earth under that tree in Nolan’s nursery, just as Leroy predicted.
