How I spent my last summer vacation.

Last year during my summer vacations, I had the wonderful experience of visiting my uncle who lives in Goa. Previously I had always gone to the hills during my vacations so I felt I would not enjoy as much in Goa. But, how wrong I was! We reached my uncle’s place at night and I was amazed at the serenity of the sea, the soft sound of the waves on the shore and the moonlight gleaming on the inky blue waters of the ocean was a sight to behold. The golden sand beneath my feet was cools and the coconut palms rustled in the soft breeze.
Lulled by these soothing sights I felt contented to be so close to nature and it was as if the soft lapping of the water on the shore was music to my ears and soon my lids grew heavy with sleep and I dozed off into a deep, peaceful sleep. When I awoke in the morning a different sight awaited me, even more breathtaking than the scene of the night before.
It was dawn and the sun was just creeping up the horizon. It was the most fascinating moment when the scarlet disc of the Sun-god was rising from the dark blue ocean like a shield – turning brighter and brighter till one was unable to face its glow and receded indoors. The beauty and glory of that moment is forever embedded on the canvas of my mind.
Whenever I see the horizon ablaze -the horizon of my mind gleams with joy and wonder. 1 am then reminded of what Wordsworth must have felt as he gazed on the sea of daffodils. I too gazed at the gleaming golden waters of the azure sea and my heart too sang just as the poet’s had sung when he too had seen the beauty of nature before his eyes.
I spent my entire vacation watching the changing faces of the waters of the ocean and playing on the sandy beach and yet each evening and each morning seemed new with the ever changing scenery before my eyes. I could never get a surfeit of it and every scene left me wanting more as the beauty of the sea and surrounding beach never failed to maze and excite me.

Theophil Eshley was an artist by profession, a cattle painter by circumstances. On one side of his garden there was a small green meadow in which an enterprising neighbour reared some small dairy cows.
One fine afternoon in late autumn, his neighbour, Adela Pingsford, banged at the outer door of his studio with a loud unwelcome sound. “There is an ox in my garden,” she announced, in explanation for her rude intrusion.
She continued, “Please help! I am all alone in the house. All I could think of was that you were a cattle painter, probably more or less familiar with the subjects that you paint, and that you might be of some assistance.”

The ox now strode swiftly up the garden. With an air of inquiry, but with no real hesitation, it crossed the turf and pushed its way through the open French window into the dining room. Some chrysanthemums stood about the room in vases, and the animal resumed its browsing operations. Eshley began striding away.

Humanity is still alive because of our creativity and ingenuity. We are constantly coming up with new ways to improve our lives and the world around us. We are also finding new ways to connect with each other and build stronger relationships. Whenever there is a natural calamity or catastrophe in some area of the world people from various countries come forward to help as was witnessed during the Tsunami in Japan and when Covid caused havoc everywhere.
Of course, there are also many examples of human cruelty and injustice. But I believe that the good in humanity outweighs the bad. I believe that we are all capable of great things, and that we have the power to make the world a better place.
We come across various news articles where in we learn how people sometimes total strangers have helped displaying human kindness and compassion.
It was reported that a man in India planted a forest over 30 years to save his village from flooding while a woman in the United States started a charity that provides free prom dresses to girls who can’t afford them. Even youngsters do not lag behind in showing kindness as was evident when a group of teenagers in Canada raised money to buy a new wheelchair for a classmate who was paralyzed in an accident and a woman in the United Kingdom donated her kidney to a stranger. Kindness is not only shown to humans but also to animals. There was a man in Australia who saved a kangaroo trapped in a burning building.
These are just a few examples of the many ways that people are showing kindness and compassion every day. These acts of kindness and compassion are proof that humanity is still alive.

Instances of violence and hatred have proven that humanity is not alive anymore. The existence of evil in the world, including war, violence, poverty, and suffering. This can make it difficult to believe that humanity is truly alive. Countries and super powers practise military aggrandisement killing thousands of innocents just for establishing their supremacy and extending dominance over large regions.
It is no secret that human values are declining, and that people are becoming more selfish and materialistic. Families are disintegrating as members vie with each other to satisfy their greed and selfish gains. The news bulletins are full of stories of brother killing brother for property, son declaring parents mentally incapacitated to gain control over property while domestic violence and rape have become common and people turn a blind eye to the suffering of the victims. Where is humanity lost in this chaotic and immoral environment?
Humans are causing a great deal of damage to the environment, which is threatening the future of life on Earth. This makes it difficult to believe that humanity is alive because the human race is deteriorating and destroying the very planet which is the bedrock of their survival. Are humans capable of thinking intelligently and realising the harm they are causing by polluting the environment.
However it is important to remember that humanity is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, and that it is impossible to reduce it to a single yes or no answer while debating on whether the basic human traits are alive or not.
iv. Describe a bad experience you had which taught you something valuable in life.

I was in high school and I was really popular. I had a lot of friends and I was always the life of the party. But one day, I did something that I really regretted. I got into a fight with my best friend and said some very hurtful things to each other and ended up not speaking to each other for months.
It was really hard to lose my best friend. I felt so alone and I didn’t know what to do. But eventually, I realized that I had made a mistake and I apologized to her. She forgave me and we became friends again.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of friendship. I learned that friends are there for you through thick and thin. They are the people who you can always count on. I also learned that it’s important to be careful about what you say, because you never know how your words might hurt someone else.
I’m so glad that I was able to learn from this experience and that I was able to repair my friendship with my best friend. I know that I will never forget this experience and I will always cherish the lessons that I learned from it.

One evening some of Napoleon’s soldiers were having a meal together when a young Frenchman brought a friend to their table. He explained that his friend was a Swede and knew no French, but he admired Napoleon so much that he wanted to join the French army and fight for him.
The soldiers looked up and saw a tall young man with blue eyes, they liked him at once. They explained that his new friends, would help him if any difficulty arose about the language.
The officers saw that he was the right sort of man for them, and he became one of Napoleon’s soldiers. He fought bravely in many battles, and gained their respect. His knowledge of French remained very weak, because he was not good at learning languages.
Several years later they heard that Napoleon himself was coming to inspect them, and the Swede was warned that the great man would probably ask him some questions. He looked very anxious.
It was well known that Napoleon always asked the same three questions and usually in the same order. The first question was “How old are you?” The second was, “How long have you been in my army?” And the third was “Did you serve in either of my last two campaigns?”
The Swede could not possibly remember all these words and so he learnt the answers in the proper order. His friend gave him a lot of practice.
For many days, the practice continued. The Swede used to walk about, saying to 20 himself, “Twenty-three, Sir, Three years, Sir, Both, Sir!” Before the day of the inspection, his friends . were satisfied. He knew his words. There ought to be no trouble.
Napoleon arrived standing in front of the motionless line of soldiers. He looked at them with great satisfaction. Then he began to walk along the lines, smiling sometimes in a friendly way, and saying a few words here and there. The Swede stood quite still except that his lips moved slightly. He was still practicing.

The Swede did not know French so he gave the answers in the order he had been taught by his friend. But Napolean asked him the second question first. The wrong answers confused Napolean and he said that either the Swede was mad or he was. The Swede answered, “Both. Sir”.
