Question 1.
Read the following text. (10)
1. The seasonal problem of water taps running dry is plaguing most of our major cities. With the bigger rivers flowing in trickles and ponds and wells reduced to clay pits, village women in remote areas have to fetch every drop of water for drinking, cooking, washing and so on, across large distances. This has only worsened a perennial problem, that of widespread pollution of water, rendering it unfit for human consumption. The monsoons and the attendant floods will not solve this problem.
2. The Delhi Administration is seriously worried about the threat to civic health posed by the
polluted waters of the Yamuna. Two main tanks are to be set up to treat sewage. At present, only 60 per cent of the 200 million gallons of the city’s sewage receives any kind of treatment before it a dumped into the river which supplies water not only to this city but to innumerable towns and villages downstream. The Ganga, the Yamuna, the Kaveri, in fact, all our important rivers serving many urban conglomerations, are fast becoming a major source of diseases.
3. A comprehensive bill introduced in the Parliament recently envisages the setting up of central and state boards for the prevention and control of water pollution. But it will obviously take some time before legislation is passed and effectively implemented. Meanwhile, the problem continues to swell. According to a survey of eight dwelling countries conducted a couple of years ago, 90 percent of all child deaths were due to water-borne diseases. It is the same unchanged story today.
4. In a country like India, a burgeoning population continuing to use the open countryside as a lavatory means that with every dust storm and rain, humans excreta laden with germs and parasites find their way to ponds, shallow wells and even the streams and rivers. Only 18 percent of the rural folk have access to potable water.
5. A new threat that has already assumed alarming proportions is industrial waste which is generally dumped untreated into the nearest river. For instance, for every kilogram of process hide, 30-40 litres of foul-smelling, wastewater has to be disposed of. There are at least 900 licensed tanneries in the organised sector. Putrefied paper and jute waste, metallic waste from strawboard and textile mills, sulphur, ammonia, urea, metallic salts and corrosive acids all find their way to the rivers of India.
6. It is important not only to make new laws to ensure the purity of water but also to realise the urgency of implementing them ruthlessly if we are to avoid a national health disaster cutting across the barrier between towns and the countryside.

The Editor
The Times of India
New Delhi
Sir,
Sub: My city, my pride
Through the columns of your esteemed paper, I would like to express the pride I feel as a citizen of Delhi. Delhi, the capital of India is a great city and boasts of many places that attract a lot of tourists as well as local people daily. Delhi is the seat of the rich cultural heritage of India and has many historical monuments. In addition, the shopping centres and beautiful parks add to the interest of the locals as well as tourists. While these places are visited around the year, efforts can be made to increase the footfall at these places. In line with the government’s initiative of free entry to historical monuments in Delhi, other places must also be made toll-free. Moreover, schools must be encouraged to get educational trips to places of cultural and historical significance. This would make the youth aware of the places that are important for Delhi and India.
I hope that enough steps are taken to increase the footfall at these places.
Thank you Yours truly,
Sangeeta

Question 5.
A. The chart given below shows how frequently people in the USA ate in the fast food restaurants between 2003 and 2013. Using the given data, write an analytical paragraph in about 120 words. (5)
B. The graph below shows how people buy music. Analyse the given data and write an analytical paragraph in about 120 words.
Answer:
A.
With the changing lifestyle, it is becoming difficult for us to cook meals at home every day. We prefer going out to our favourite fast food restaurant at least once in week or a month. This tendency to eat fast food is evident in the above graph which shows the frequency of eating at a fast food restaurant among the people of the USA.
Overall, most people in the USA prefer going to a fast food restaurant either once in a week or once or twice a month throughout the timeframe. At the same time, there were only a few people who went to the fast food chains every day or did not go at all. The numbers seem to change almost negligently. For all three years, i.e. 2003, 2006, and 2013, Americans preferred fast food only once or twice in a month or week resting somewhere around to 30-35%. The Americans who either ate fast food every day to never at all always remained below 5%.
Among the Americans, some people would eat at fast food chains several times a week and some also ate at fast food chains only a few times a year. Given that the data did not change much, we can say that the love for fast food remains the same.
B. Tends in Buying Music
The importance of music is very well depicted by the new applications for music streaming being introduced every day. The given graph illustrates the trends in music buying habits between 2011 and 2018.
The data presents three different methods of buying music: streaming, downloading, and buying CDs. Overall, both downloads and the physical state of music have steadily declined. The latter has slumped since 2011, while the downturn for the former began in 2014. However, there has been a sharp rise in people streaming music since 2013. In 2011, the majority of music sales were of CDs, at 55% of all sales. In contrast, streaming was not common at all as it is only 5%.
Although people had started to download music, it only represented 35% of sales. As sales of CDs began to fall, the era of downloads began. Downloading rose steadily and soon overtook physical sales in mid-2013. During the same period, with newer technology streaming doubled to 10% and started to grow more dramatically.
Downloads peaked in 2014 at about 43% of sales but fell to 30% by 2018. This was slightly higher than physical sales, which reduced to 25%. Streaming, on the other hand, overtook both of them and accounted for just over 40% of sales in 2018.

(C) Valli’s unique maiden bus ride experience could be possible because she belonged to a small village. Do you agree? Why? /Why not? (2 reasons) (Madam Rides a Bus) [3]

Agree:
- A bus ride seemed like a fascinating means of recreation and adventure —unlike cities and bigger towns
- She could travel alone safely -unfortunately, not recommended in larger townships or cities
- There was only one bus that Valli observed several times – cities have varied means of transport that might seem more adventurous
Disagree:
- Fascination for riding a bus or an automobile can exist in children of Valli’s age even in big cities.
- Travelling unnoticed is easier in large cities than in small towns or villages due to familiarity Cities would offer more opportunities for a bus ride due to the availability and frequency of several buses on the same route.

The parents called out in a shrill voice, along with cajoling and scolding him in turn. Then they threatened to let him starve. When all this proved unsuccessful, his mother tempted him by flying close to his ledge with a piece of fish in her mouth. Maddened by hunger, he dived
forward to get that piece and fell into the space. To save himself, he spread his wings and found that he was able to fly. Thus, the entire family helped him to learn the art of flying. His parents and his brothers and sister had landed on the green surface of water ahead of him. They were calling him to do the same thing. They were flying around him. They were roaring and diving. When he was tired and weak with hunger, he could not rise. Then his family came around him crying and praising him. Dear Diary,
I am feeling ashamed of myself today.
I cheated the man who employed me and was about to run away with his money to a different city. Thank God that my conscience didn’t allow me to board the train. After much thinking, I have decided to return to my master’s place. I will keep the money back from where I took it and hope that my master doesn’t come to know about what I did. I have broken my master’s trust and vow to never do such a thing again in my life.
He has been so good to me. Apart from being my master, he is also my teacher. I promise myself to become a better person and never cheat anyone again in my life.
