CBSE Class 6 English Sample Paper Set 1
Time Allowed: 2 Hours
Maximum Marks: 60
General Instructions:
Read the instructions very carefully and strictly follow them:
(i) The Question Paper contains THREE sections-READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
(ii) Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part.
SECTION A: Reading Skills
1. Read the following passage carefully: (10 Marks)
1. The instrument used to assess the purity of milk is called a lactometer’. It is a cylindrical vessel made by blowing a glass tube. One end of the glass tube is blown in the form of a bulb and filled with mercury. The other end is blown in the form of a thin tube and sealed. For calibration it is dipped in pure milk. The point up to which it sinks in the pure milk is marked ‘M’. After that it is put in water and at the point up to which it sinks in water is marked ‘ W ‘. It sinks less in milk than in water because milk is denser than water. The portion between ‘ M ‘ and ‘ W ‘ is divided into three parts and marked as 3, 2, and 1 to indicate the level of purity.
2. Whenever we want to test the purity of milk, the instrument is put in milk. If it sinks up to the mark ‘ M ‘, the milk is pure. If the milk is not pure, but mixed with water, it would sink to mark higher than ‘ M ‘. When the instrument stands at the mark 3, the milk is 75 % pure. At the mark 2 , the purity is only 50 %. Mark 1 indicates a purity of 25 %.
3. Even though lactometer is commonly used to measure the purity of milk, yet, it is not a very reliable instrument. It has been observed that in the case of skimmed milk (denser than pure milk); the lactometer fails to give the correct assessment of the purity, if the density of the skimmed milk is made equal to that of the pure milk by adding water in an appropriate proportion. (Source: Children’s Knowledge Bank)

SECTION A: Reading Skills (10 Marks)
1. Read the following passage carefully.
1. Rights are those claims and demands of an individual or group of individuals to good life which are accepted by the community or society as essential for the common good and recognized by the State. In other words, rights are also those essential factors without which human life cannot sustain.
2. Human rights, as the term is most commonly used, are basic entitlements bestowed upon each and every human being by virtue of birth. The underlying idea of such rights is to ensure that all men, women and children are treated with respect and dignity. For example, as human beings, it is our birthright that all of us should be given equal treatment and should not be discriminated on any account due to differences of religion, caste, class, colour, gender or anything else either by the State or the community or the family.
This is because each person is special with their own individual talents and abilities and none are inferior or superior to each other. Likewise, it is our birthright to have access to opportunities, whereby we can develop to our fullest potential and achieve all that we aspire to become. These rights include the right to life, freedom and justice. These rights guarantee our dignity as human beings. It is precisely for these reasons that human rights are sometimes called ‘natural rights’.
The fact that nobody gives us these rights nor can anyone take away these rights from us, human rights are said to be ‘inalienable’. Human rights are also recognised as being universal, interrelated and indivisible. This means that they belong to everyone irrespective of one’s religion, community, caste, class, gender, age, social or economic status.
On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer the following questions. (1 × 5 = 5 Marks)

2. Read the following passage carefully.
Without good health, life is hardly worth living. And certainly no one can study effectively over a long period who is fatigued, sluggish, anemic or suffering from even a minor ailment. The need for mental health is equally important. Mental health includes freedom from worry and anxiety, a sense of self worth and the ability to meet problems sensibly and rationally. Body and mind are closely interrelated and it is rightly said that a healthy mind can develop only in a healthy body.
That means that we should pay enough attention to our habits of exercise, sleep, diet and to the physical environment in which we live. Exercise does not have to be in the form of strenuous games and sports. Not everyone has an aptitude for athletics. Even some light exercises like walking is enough to keep you and your body fit. No doubt, that very strenuous exercise fatigues the central nervous system and therefore, reduces the capacity for mental work.
But tighter and more moderate exercise has a beneficial effect on mental work. Eight hours of sleep each night is required by the average teenager. There may be individual differences, but the vast majority take between six to nine hours sleep. Sleep enables the body to eliminate the toxic products which have accumulated during the day, repair damage done to the tissues and to store up energy. The whole day is relaxed and rested in preparation for the next day’s activity.
On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer the following questions. ( 1 × 5 = 5 Marks)
(i) Walking is a kind of:
(a) light work
(b) light job
(c) light exercise
(d) heavy exercise

1. Sri Ramakrishna did not get his ideas from books. He did not go to any college or university; in fact he was not even at school for a long time. He was born in 1836 and very early in life he became a temple priest. He found the greatest happiness in being a priest, and spent all his time in the service of Kali, the Divine Mother, whom he worshipped in the temple at Dakshineswar. He lived a deeply religious life and spent days and nights in prayer. He led a very hard life and often went without food and water. This upset his health badly, but he did not mind it. He continued to devote all his time to his religious duties. It is said that once he was in Samadhi for a period of six months and in this Samadhi he had a vision of the Divine Mother. This vision brought him a new understanding of his religion.
2. Unlike most holy men, Sri Ramakrishna was not satisfied with knowing the truth of his own religion. He desired to have the same understanding of other religions and for this he felt that he ought to live the disciplined life laid in each of them. To understand Islam he lived the life of a pious Muslim, and during this period he offered prayers five times every day like a true Muslim.
3. Sri Ramakrishna then lived the disciplined life of a Christian and at the end of that period had a vision of Christ. He next studied the teachings of the Buddha and Mahaveera. He also studied everything that a Sikh ought to know about his religion. 2. Sanchi is the site of three stupas. Stupa No. 1, also called the Great Stupa, is one of the most magnificent monuments of its time. Its construction was probably started by the Emperor Ashoka in the mid-third century B.C. and later it was enlarged. It is enclosed by a massive stone railing pierced by four gateways. These gateways have elaborate carvings depicting the life of Buddha.
Each gateway is made up of two square posts topped by statues of animals and dwarfs. It consists of a base, bearing a hemispherical dome (anda) representing the dome of heaven enclosing the earth. It is surmounted by a square-rail unit (harmika) from which rises a mast (yatsi). It symbolizes the cosmic axis. The mast bears umbrellas (chhatras) that represent the various heavens (devaloka).
3. Stupa No. 2, with railing decorations, has carvings relating to late Sunga period (1st century B.C.). Stupa No. 3, with its single gateway (torana), was constructed in the late first century A.D.
